Pathogenic changes in Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (P. g. tritici) in Australia during the period 1969-1985 are reviewed. The frequencies of individual pathotypes were influenced by the combinations of resistance genes present in the most common wheat cultivars. The deployment of different resistant genes in triticale and wheat has resulted in distinct populations within P. g. tritici adapted to each crop. Future cultivar development for triticale should be aimed at maintaining this divergence.
