Plant amino acid compositions were reasonably constant although the cyst(e)ine content was low in the green leaf fraction of Dicanthium sericeum, Iseilema spp. and Enneapogon spp. and in the green stem and dead leaf fractions of Astrebla lappacea. The amino acid concentrations in the oesophageal fistulae boluses were higher than those found in the green fraction of any of the plants. With one sheep per 1.5-2 ha, the flow of amino acids into the small intestines was 24.8 g per kg DOMI less than the quantity ingested; with a 20 percent higher stocking rate, flow exceeded the quantity consumed by 16.4 g per kg DOMI; the reduced flow was associated with a higher forb content in the diet.
