Calves were immunised with fractions of Fusobacterium necrophorum in mineral-oil adjuvant and then each foot was injected with homologous organisms through the interdigital skin. About 220 000 000 cells from an 18-h liquid culture could be expected to cause 50 percent of the feet of control calves to develop marked swellings following subcutaneous injection. Immunity was associated with antigens in the supernatant of the culture; these may be, or be closely associated with, the exotoxins.
