Accumulation of large quantities of sewage sludge, containing relatively high levels of heavy metal, has increased the need for a solution for safe disposal of this material without causing new ecological problems. Sludges are well known to contain high levels of organic and inorganic materials but can also affect plant growth by supplying growth hormones. We tested the hormonal effect of sewage sludge on rooting of mung bean cuttings. Sewage sludge induces the formation of adventitious roots on mung bean cuttings, in a way similar to the promotion by IBA, the most common treatment for root initiation. Moreover, sewage sludge markedly increased root elongation and epicotyl growth as compared with the effect of IBA. The present study discusses the potential advantage of using sewage sludge in nurseries and greenhouses as a growth medium for root system and whole plant development.
