Knitted fabric made from 23.4 micron wool can be less prickly than fabric made from finer 21.5 micron wool

Knitted fabrics were produced from 2 groups of fleeces with similar characteristics but one having a mean fibre diameter of 23.2 micron, coefficient of variation 16.4 percent, and the other 21.5 micron and 21.7 percent. The 23.2 micron fabric was perceived as being less prickly even though it was 1.7 micron greater in mean fibre diameter. The wool of the less prickly fabric had a lower level of fibre diameter variability and a lower coarse fibre content when expressed as a percentage of fibres greater than 30 micron (3.6 versus 5.0 percent).
