Effects of available soil nitrogen and rates of inoculation on nitrogen fixation by irrigated soybeans and evaluation of [natural abundance of] 15N methods for measurement

Cropping with oats in the previous winter reduced the soil N available to irrigated soybeans by half, and altered the occurrence of 15N. Effects on the soybean crop were to increase N fixation in early growth, while reducing growth rate, and during seed development, which, together with high inoculation rates, resulted in high seed yields and seed N concentration. Estimates of the proportion of plant N derived from fixation by the 15N method agreed well with estimates based on the relative concentration of ureides in xylem sap.
