The effect of exchange rates on the pricing behaviour of Italian exporters. The case of wine and cheese

In this paper, we examine the possibility that Italian exporters of cheese and wine adopt a dual pricing behaviour, discriminating between DOC (quality products produced in determined regions) and non DOC products. In particular, in periods of depreciation of the lira they should tend to stabilize the prices in foreign currency of DOC products, increasing export prices in lire and therefore unit profits. Instead, in periods of appreciation, foreign prices of both categories should stabilize if the exporters try to increase their market share in the country of destination. The first effect should be dominant for DOC products, as a consequence of reputational factors. The results obtained are not conclusive, nevertheless they offer some indications: not only do exporters not seem to discriminate between the two products, but in general a complete pass-through of exchange rates on foreign prices seems to be the rule

إيطالي. In questo lavoro gli Autori esaminano la possibilita' che gli esportatori italiani di formaggi e vino adottino decisioni di prezzo duali, discriminando tra prodotti DOC e non DOC. In particolare, nei periodi di deprezzamento della lira essi dovrebbero tendere a stabilizzare i prezzi in valuta estera dei prodotti DOC, aumentando il prezzo in lire delle esportazioni e, quindi, i profitti unitari. Invece, nei periodi di apprezzamento, i prezzi esteri di entrambe le categorie dovrebbero stabilizzarsi nei casi in cui gli esportatori tendano ad accrescere la propria quota di mercato nei paesi di destinazione. Il primo effetto dovrebbe dominare per i prodotti DOC, come conseguenza di fattori reputazionali. I risultati ottenuti, pur non essendo conclusivi, offrono alcune indicazioni: non solo gli esportatori sembrano discriminare tra i due prodotti, ma in generale una trasmissione completa dei tassi di cambio sui prezzi esteri sembra essere la regola
