Testing new Centrosema germplasm for acid soils [Colombia]
1985
Schultze-Kraft, R. | Keller-Grein, G. (Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical, Cali (Colombia). Tropical Pastures Program)
In a trial of 133 accessions representing 12 species, at Santander de Quilichao, all accessions of C. macrocarpum, C. arenarium and an undescribed species and several accessions of C. brasilianum and C. pubescens grew well. Rhizoctonia foliar blight affected mainly C. brasilianum. Pseudomonas bacterial blight affected mainly the new species and C. schiedeanum. In a 24-month trial under cutting of 12 selected accessions, C. macrocarpum outyielded the others by 50-100 percent. Leaf:stem ratio was highest in a non-adapted commercial control C. pubescens. Capacity to root on trailing stems was best in C. pubescens, C. schiedeanum and one of the accessions of the new species. Forage quality of the acid-soil tolerant accessions compared favourably with the commercial control.
