Eucalyptus - its reputation and its roots: millet and eucalyptus shelterbelt in northern Nigeria

Although there is a growing concern about the use of eucalyptus in agroforestry systems, farmers in the tropics continue to plant for cash, poles and fuelwood. Scientific evidence on the potentially negative impact of eucalyptus, both short and long term, is still meager despite the numerous reports of allelopathy and mining of water resources. It was in this respect that work was begun at the Shelterbelt Research Station in Kano, Nigeria, with the main objective of quantifying the effects of eucalyptus on crops due to shading, root competition for water and allelopathy. This paper gives a brief description of this work.
