[Effect of Zea mays or Vigna unguiculata on the growth of three feed grasses]
1994
Duarte, J.M. | Pezo, D.A. | Arze, J.
The maximum total aerial biomass yields obtained for P. purpureum cv. Mott, B. brizantha cv. Marandu and B. dictyoneura CIAT 6133 grown in monoculture were: 113.4, 33.8 and 6.24 tons DM/ha, respectively. When intercropped to corn, these yields declined to 44 percent, 38 percent, and 68 percent of what was recorded for the monoculture treatments. The corresponding values for the association with vigna were 49 percent, 35 percent, and 10 percent, respectively. On the other hand, the growth pattern analysis indicated that a fast growing prostrate legume, such as vigna cv. Chiricano, which can reach a very high leaf area index (9.1 cm(2)/cm(2) of land) at only 56 days after planting imposes strong competitive effects on the companion grasses.
