Study of carbohydrate metabolism in fattening steers fed diets having different compositions

The study of carbohydrate metabolism in fattening steers used diets containing alfalfa ensiled according to three different procedures (variants): with 1 percent propionic acid addition; with 0.5 percent hydrochloric acid; and with 2 percent molasses and Lactosil addition. The experiment involved four animals divided into two groups according to bodyweight values, and housed in metabolic stalls. The amounts of ingest and excreta were recorded on a daily basis. The feeding ration was made up of corn plus one of the above mentioned alfalfa silage variants. Examination of the dietary carbohydrate content and the apparent digestibility values led to the conclusion that the best results were obtained with diet 1 (corn plus alfalfa silage with 1 percent propionic acid addition); starch, sugar and crude fibber digestibility values were 98.92 percent; 96.68 percent; and 56.53 percent, respectively. Further studies will be conducted which will also involve ensiled feedstuffs such as triticale silage, ammoniated and non-ammoniated corn silage.
