Methods to identify resistance to Ascochyta blight and Fusarium wilt in chickpea germplasm lines and segregating populations are discussed. The influence of the epidemiology of diseases, pathogenic variability in the pathogens and inheritance of resistance in the host is considered. Better understanding of the epidemiology of Ascochyta blight and Fusarium wilt is needed. The effects of interaction among environmental factors on epidemics of Ascochyta blight and Fusarium wilt, and the role of the teleomorph of A. rabiei in the pathogen variability and dispersal should be further investigated. High pathogenic variability exists in both pathogens. The identification of pathotypes of A. rabiei and F. oxysporum f.sp. ciceri should be carried out with common standardized methods and differentials
