Investigation on the occurrence of the peach latent mosaic viroid (PLMVd) in peach trees in Campania

إنجليزي. A research has been carried out on the occurrence of PLMVd in peach-orchards of the Campania region (Southern Italy). The results showed that PLMVd is constantly present in trees showing one of the following symptoms: calico, yellow mosaic, decoloration of fruit-skin and chlorosis plus die-back. On the other hand, PLMVd was also detected in more than 50% of asymptomatic, apparently healthy peach trees. The detection was done using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the nucleic acid extracts and/or a molecular probe of PLMVd kindly supplied by Dr. R. Flores. It is not yet clear why PLMVd does not induce symptoms in several affected peach trees. The sequence analysis of some PLMVd electrophoretic isolates has shown peculiar differences and so we can hypothesize the presence in the field of pathogenically different PLMVd strains

I risultati di una ricerca pluriennale condotta in Campania su cultivar diverse di pesco, affette o meno da sintomi ben valutabili, hanno dimostrato che il viroide del mosaico latente del pesco (PLMVd) e' presente sempre in alberi sintomatici e nel 50% di alberi apparentemente normali. La ricerca e' stata eseguita usando metodi elettroforetici e/o una sonda molecolare del PLMVd, cortesemente fornita da Dr. Flores per la realizzazione di analisi di ibridazione Northern o dot-blot. Il perche' della manifestazione di sintomi in alcuni casi, e non in altri, e' ancora sconosciuto. Sulla base di alcune indicazioni fornite dalla determinazione della sequenza nucleotidica di alcuni dei viroidi isolati elettroforeticamente, si ipotizza che in natura esistano "ceppi" dotati di patogenicita' diversa
