The cadmium problem [foods; air pollution; Australia]
1992
Ashton, J.F. | Laura, R.S. (Newcastle Univ. (Australia). Dept. of Education)
The major source of direct land contamination with Cd is waste disposal and the application of phosphate fertilizers to soils, resulting in uptake by plants. Cd also enters the food chain directly from sewage sludge and atmospheric deposition. The highly toxic nature of Cd in the human diet is recognized in a variety of disturbances, with the kidney being the organ most sensitive to long-term Cd accumulation.
