A slotted rotary drum atomizer was designed, consisting of an open-ended, thick walled, rotating plastic cylinder with a series of longitudinal slots. The liquid distribution system consisted of a bronze metal liquid feed channel with holes leading to a series of grooves on the insides of the vanes between the slots. The open ended design allowed the drum to act as a small centrifugal fan. The design is simpler and cheaper than metal cage and rotary drum atomizers. Preliminary experiments suggested that droplet spectra produced are similar to those produced by rotary cage atomizers. Fitted with windmill blades, the atomizer should also be suitable for use on agricultural aircraft.
