The relationships between soil, fertilizers and environment are determined mainly by characteristics of the fertilizers themselves and agroecological conditions of the environment. The nitrogenous fertilizers deserve the highest attention among the fertilizers. The majority of the standard fertilizers are soluble and this feature enables them to influence the environment. The slow-release nitrogenous fertilizers are characterized by loosing nitrogen gradually and by lower risk of environmental contamination. Changes of nitrate nitrogen-content and nitrogen migration in soil profile eutric fluvisol, ammonium nitrogen content, soil reaction, osmotic potential and biological activity after application of standard and slow-release nitrogen fertilizers in smallpot field trials were examined. This paper is an introduction to next 5 articles which will be published in next issues.
