The heterosis effect and phenotype correlations between the quantitative characters of wheat (plant height, number of spikes per plant, grain weight per spike, number of spikelets per spike, number of grains per spikelets, and the weight of 1 000 grains) were evaluated at the complete diallel crossing of 4 genotypes (Slavia, Tiszataj, Maris Marksman and SO-78-4415) under field conditions. A method of testing the mean values by the Student t-test compared to the Slavia variety has been used to evaluate the heterosis effect. The extent of this effect was influenced by parental genotypes, direction of crossing and the complex of soil and climatic factors. In both experimental years the heterosis effect was the highest in number of spikes per plant (31.16-43.14 % in comparison to the Slavia variety.) Tiszataj x Maris Marksman was found to be best hybrid combination as to grain weight per spike. In all genotypes, significant correlation coefficients have been determined between the grain weight per spike and the number of grains per spikelet, the number of spikelets per spike and number of grains per spike, and number of grains per spike and the number of grains per spikelet.
