Recent research on pasture growth and competitive relations in shaded conditions, the different adaptation of plants to shade, the nitrogen economy of shaded pastures and the effects of shade on nutritive value are discussed. The interactions between plantation crops and pasture, the options for pasture management and the levels of animal performance achieved indicate considerable potential for the expansion of this form of land use. Further research is needed to identify better adapted genotypes which overcome some current deficiencies and to provide better bases for management recommendations.
