Relationship between nitrogen content and spectral properties in corn (Zea mays L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) leaves [Tuscany]

The relations between corn and wheat leaf nitrogen concentration and reflectance, absorptance and transmittance have been studied. Leaf nitrogen content was modified increasing crop nitrogen fertilizer rate. For corn, data derived from measurements carried out at 2 different stages (3 and 5) on 2 leaves growing at different stem height and for wheat, measurements were taken on flag leaf at inflorescence emergence stage. Spectral reflectance and transmittance were determined, in vivo, using a hand-held spectroradiometer connected to an external integrating sphere in a spectral band ranging from 400 to 1,100 nm. Absorbance was computed. The relations between corn and wheat leaf nitrogen concentration and reflectance, absorbance and transmittance were curvilinear with progressive decrease in reflectance and transmittance and progressive increase in absorbance. At the same leaf N concentration, corn leaf absorbance was higher than wheat and reflectance and transmittance was lower. Within the PAR region TM2 region TM2 was always the most sensitive to the variations of leaf nitrogen content
