Use of non traditional sources of energy in the diet of trotter horses

To evaluate the effect of high energy diets, 5 trotters were fed three different diets: 1. Control diet (oats and hay); 2. Oil added diet (oats, hay and oil); 3. Flake added diet (oats, hay and corn flakes). Each diet was offered for three weeks and then the horses were subjected to a trial, consisting of a 2,600 m trot, simulating a race. Blood samples were taken at rest (AR) and 5, 45 and 110 minutes after exercise. Glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, NEFA, total lipids, beta-hydroxybutyrate, total protein, urea, albumin, creatinine, lactic acid, LDH, CK, GOT and GPT levels were analyzed. All data were subjected to mathematical-statistical analysis according to a factorial scheme with 3 x 4 (diets x samples) and showed significant differences for the effect diet. The variations in the NEFA levels were particularly interesting as they indicate a different use of energy in the oil and flake added diets. The decrease in lactica acid and creatinine levels confirms a lesser degree of muscle fatigue
