Impact of CIMMYT wheats in Australia: evidence of international research spillovers. [Economics Research report no 1/95]
1995
Brennan, J.P. | Fox, P.N. (New South Wales Agriculture, Wagga Wagga (Australia))
Provides detailed analyses of the impacts, in both yield and financial terms, on Australian wheat production of varieties introduced over the years from the CIMMYT breeding programme in Mexico. Although the programme is directed at developing countries, Australia has received spillover benefits in the material which has been imported over the past 20 years. Few of the imported lines have been used directly in Australia, but have been used as parent lines in the breeding of new varieties specifically adapted to the Australian environment. The increased yields and improved resistance to diseases which have resulted can be translated into specific financial benefits on a national scale and these are detailed in the report. This report revises and updates a cost benefit report produced in 1986 on the CIMMYT breeding programme benefits.
