KCl inhibited oxygen evolution by Sarcocornia quinqueflora thylakoids and photosystem (PS) 11 membranes from Avicennia marina when compared with NaCl. The effects of KCl and NaCl in spinach thylakoids and PS 11 particles were almost indistinguishable. K2S04 was also inhibitory but Na2S04 was not, indicating K is the inhibitory ion. Varying K and Na amounts by the use of sulphate salts showed that inhibition of oxygen evolution by halophytic thylakoids could be caused by quite small K (ion) concentration and was related to the K:Na ratio.
