In experiments with a range of genotypes under high-input management conditions sown at 4 densities between April and August, it was found that short-stature, early-maturing, low spike-bearing cultivars are most suited to high-yielding conditions from any sowing date. Such genotypes use assimilates and nitrogen most efficiently and, importantly, have a low propensity to lodge.
