Report of a tour to the USA to investigate options available for Argentine ant control: 10 April-27 May, 1989
1989
Davis, P.R. (Western Australian Dept. of Agriculture, Perth. Entomology Branch)
Argentine ants are likely to be a greater pest in Western Australia than California because the Californian climate on the whole is significantly drier. Argentine ants are the major domestic ant pest in California. None of the researchers contacted knew of any concerted attempt to introduce an IPM programme to control Argentine ants. Control of Argentine ants in orchards relies upon skirt pruning combined with insecticide application. At present most control of Argentine ants in California is achieved through use of insecticide sprays. Current research in California is concentrating on baiting techniques, especially using the bait toxicant, hydramethylnon.
