Five winter wheat cultivars (Hana, Regina, Sparta, Viginta and Zdar) were evaluated under greenhouse conditions for antibiosis to cereal aphids Metopolophium dirhodum, Rhopalosiphum padi and Sitobion avenae. Two criteria were used: number of aphids and their dry mass produced per tiller (M. dirhodum and R. padi) or ear (S. avenae) within 14 days from artificial infestation of plants by aphids. The results of both methods were similar. A certain level of antibiosis to R. padi nad S. avenae was observed in Regina cultivar, to M. dirhodum in Sparta. In all aphid species the differences in aphid number and dry matter between the most suitable and unsuitable cultivar were significant. The differences in cultivar suitability for aphids were accompanied by the significantly higher proportion of winged aphids on unsuitable cultivars compared to those on suitable ones.
