Ethylene: what is it? [horticultural crops; storage losses]. [Seminar paper]

Yuen, C.M.C. (Western Australian Dept. of Agriculture, Perth. Div. of Horticulture)
In the United States, it is estimated that 20 percent of all ornamental crops produced annually is lost as a result of poor handling after harvest - and poor ethylene control was thought to be the major contributing factor. For produce intended for short term marketing, strict ethylene control is less important if proper management of temperature and humidity and gentle handling, is adhered to. But for produce intended for long term storage or long distance transport, strict ethylene control is vital. Proper control of ethylene can dramatically extend the storage life of most perishables and allows flexibility in marketing. If not controlled, the presence of ethylene in the handling and storage environment can cause substantial loss of fresh produce.
