Carbon and nitrogen cycles in some forest soils related to the humus content and microbial activity

Relations between carbon and nitrogen cycles were studied. The connective factor was the content of humus. There were four different forest stands: spruce, mountain ash, birch and Pinus uncinata. Forest soils have three significant horizons: F - A01, H - A02 and A (F - fermentative, H - humic). Although basic respiration and ammonification were highest from F horizon of Pinus uncinata, its content of humus was very low (17.63 %). The ratio C/N was only about 18 %. Spruce and birch F - horizon had the values of C/N below 20 and the amount of humus was bellow 50 %. In F - A01 mountain ash horizon the value of C/N was 20 and also th level of humus 50 % (59.01). Other results were from H - A02 horizon. The ratios C/N (mountain ash, birch, Pinus uncinata) were 20 and also their humus content was bellow 50 %. Basic respiration was highest in the soil of H - A02 mountain ash horizon but the percent of humus was lowest. The counts of aerobic and aerobic ammonification bacteria were approximately the same in the soil of four forest stands.
