The diagnostic effectiveness of inorganic phosphate (Pi) concentration in plasma, thickness (CBT) of rib cortex, faecal P concentration and urinary hydroxyproline (HYP) excretion for dietary P deficiency in growing cattle was tested in 4 grazing trials on sites across northern Australia. Plasma Pi was highly correlated with liveweight gain (LWG) during the growing (wet) season but only poorly, if at all, during the dry season and correlations differed between years, sites and seasons. Plasma Pi successfully diagnosed P deficiency in 90-100 percent of cases at the end of the growing season. Comparison of plasma Pi, faecal P, urine HYP and CBT in relation to season and treatment suggested that efficiency of P utilization responded to treatments differently between sites and ought to be investigated.
