The role of free water in the spread of Colletotrichum orbiculare [a mycoherbicide for the control of Xanthium spinosum, weed of pastures]. Technical note
1990
Say, M.M. (New South Wales Agriculture and Fisheries, Orange (Australia). Agricultural Research and Veterinary Centre)
In the glasshouse, field specimens of infected Xanthium spinosum on the soil surface of pots were subjected to 3 watering regimes: sprinkled to simulate rain; subirrigated from below the soil surface; and "dew", i.e. subirrigated but placed in a dew cabinet for 5 nights at seedling emergence. In the rain treatment, all seedlings developed anthracnose and died. In the dew treatment, there was some disease development, but less and slower; and subirrigation was hardly different from controls with no diseased material present. The results demonstrate the immobility of the fungus without water splash.
