Sorghum dry matter yields at anthesis increased linearly with P however applied. Grain yields totalled over 5 years fitted a quadratic response curve with either method. Sunflower DM yields at anthesis increased with broadcast P in the first season only, but seed yields were unaffected by P over 4 seasons. Fertilizer P may not be needed for sunflower, but banding at about 70 kg P per ha is recommended for sorghum. Based on extractable P values, the relative effectiveness of initial broadcast and incorporated P declined over the first 4 years, but then tended to remain steady at about 0.67.
