Control of glucose homeostasis in lactating ewes - use of the alloxan-diabetic, insulin stabilized ewe to study effects of insulin and growth hormone [sheep]

In one experiment, it is shown that alloxan-induced diabetes can be stabilized with exogenous insulin. Though feed intake and milk yield were normal, fat content tended to increase, suggesting a role for insulin in the low-milk-fat syndrome. On resumption of insulin treatment after interruption, altered glucose kinetics suggested an up-regulation of insulin receptors. In a second study, stabilized diabetic ewes were treated with recombinant bovine growth hormone; observations suggest that the hormone is glucogenic and diabetogenic.
