Adulterated olive oils from the Swiss market 1993-1995

Between 1993 and June 1995, 771 samples of olive oil fromn the Swiss market were analyzed for the detection of admixed other oils or of raffinates to oils sold as virgin. 236 (31%) of them were rejected. 52 oils sold as virgin contained excessive concentrations of stigmastadiene; for 184 samples, admixture of other oils was detected. This number of rejected samples of olive oil is high, particularly when taking into account that many types of adulteration or unacceptable practices still remained undetected. Amounts of admixed oils were mostly small, showing the effect of improved control within the trade. On the other hand, the sophisticated pretreatment of many of the admixed oils indicates the strong interest in adulteration and the involvement of professionals experienced in oil technology and analytical chemistry. A large proportion of the adulterations was not detectable by the official methods. As frauds are rapidly adjusted to the analytical control, the latter needs constant improvement; restrictions in the application of innovative methods should be eliminated

إيطالي. Dal 1993 al giugno del 1995 sono stati esaminati 771 campioni di olio di oliva prelevati sul mercato svizzero. Di questi campioni, 236 sono stati contestati in quanto non rispondenti al dichiarato. In particolare 52 oli dichiarati vergini sono stati respinti per un eccessivo contenuto di stigmastadiene. Per i rimanenti 184 sono state rilevate aggiunte di oli estranei. Le quantita' di oli estranei aggiunti si sono rivelate contenute; e' possibile che questo fatto sia dovuto ad un piu' efficiente controllo. Impiegando metodiche ufficiali una larga parte delle adulterazioni riscontrate sarebbe sfuggita al controllo che viceversa e' riuscito ad evidenziarle ricorrendo a metodiche non codificate: e' pertanto auspicabile che i nuovi metodi abbiano iter brevi nella loro ufficializzazione in modo che il controllo possa divenire piu' efficace
