The study of the free stages of two Hemicycliophora species (H. epicharoides and H. typica) revealed that total body length, stylet length, oesophageal length and total number of body annules are the most useful characters to distinguish between the two species; gonad shape appears to be the best morphological character for a quick diagnosis of the juvenile stages. The gonad developmental stages from J sub(2) to the adult female are very similar within the two species considered, with the greatest increase of the gonad length in the J sub(4) - adult female moulting. Variations of the other morphometric characters (excluding oesophageal length) are more evident in the moult J sub(2) - J sub(3). The difference observed in the increase of the gonad length between H. epicharoides and H. typica is due to a different growth rate in the two species and not to a different extension of the same in the two species, as suggested by statistical tests
