Growth and adaptability parameters of Bos taurus x Bos indicus calves in the humid tropics [Malaysia]

Data were collected on calves born in 1991 as part of a crossbreeding program at one of the Malaysian Agriculture and Development Institute (MARDI) research centers. Birth weight was lightest (17.3 (plus minus) 0.8 kg) for indigenous cattle, the Kedah-Kelantan (KK), and heaviest for Charolais x Kedah-Kelantan (CK) (23.6 (plus minus) 1.6 kg), Simmental x Kedah-Kelantan (SK) (22.9 (plus minus) 0.9 kg ), followed by Limousin x Kedah-Kelantan (LK) (20.9 (plus minus) 1.1 kg), Brahman x Kedah-Kelantan (BK) (21.0 (plus minus) 1.6 kg), Hereford x Kedah-Kelantan (HK) (18.3 (plus minus) 3 kg). At weaning, SK (121.0 (plus minus) 5.8 kg) was heaviest, with CK, LK, HK, and BK intermediate, and KK ligthest (79.5 (plus minus) 3.7 kg). At 9 months and 12 months, SK (156.2 (plus minus) 7.8 kg and 212 kg (plus minus) 5.8 kg) was heaviest and KK lightest (101.1 (plus minus) 8.8 kg and 130.1 kg (plus minus) 3.9 kg), and other crossbred calves were intermediate.
