Plant fibres are predominantly polymers of carbohydrate which are not digestible by the monogastrics. They can be degraded by various methods. Enzymic degradation seemed to be the most appropriate technique. Limited successes in the degradation of local by-products had been reported. Further development into an efficient process require knowledge on the chemical structure of the polymers and the mode of action of cell wall modifying enzymes. Research progress in the nutritional improvement of palm kernel cake for poultry feed was used as an example in this deliberation
