1989
The islands of Zanzibar and Pemba are famous for the production of cloves, spices and fruits. While the cloves is the main cash crop efforts are being made to diversify the economy by developing non traditional crops both for domestic consumption and for export. It is in this endevour that fruits have been earmarked as a crop which requires special attention. Many kinds of fruits founded are mangoes, oranges, limes, lemons, breadfruit, mabungoes (Landophia florida), pawpaws and tomatoes are found in significant quantities. The project concept is based on the need by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar to rid the islands of over-reliance on cloves for export earnings and increase of income to the farmers particularly in Pemba Island from fruits which are no organised market
