Rainfed rice in Zanzibar is mainly grown in hydromorphous soils mainly in the valleys. At an average, production of rainfed rice is quite below optimum, one of the major contributing factors of low production is due to pest/disease and weeds competition. In the valleys of Unguja mainly Kibokwa, Kilombero and Cheju Heteronychus beetles have been causing serious damage to rice. Heteronychus beetles cause serious damage when the rice is at the young stage, they eat at the growing point just at the soil level. The damage is done by the adults while the larvae eat the organic matter. There are mainly two species in Zanzibar H. Pygidialis which is the most common and H. Consimilis which makes up only few percent of the population
