Survey of the cultural and post-harvest practices of mangoes in Zanzibar
1992
Williams, E.A.
There are numerous varieties of mangoes grown in Zanzibar. It is unclear as to how many true varieties there are. Over 150 local varietal names were noted on both Pemba and Unguja islands. Most Zanzibar mangoes are traded on local market. Trade is centered around half a dozen main varieties with produce quality being extremely variable. Only Boribo muyuni are exported from Zanzibar. At present export trade is solely to Muscat and Dubai. It seems that these markets do not have stringent produce quality standards and are more concerned with the volume of produce traded. Produce quality/appearance of Zanzibar mangoes is poor. Skin blemishes and latex staining are widespread problems which require attention if market oppotunities within European supermarket sectors are to be considered
