A three month field study was conducted to identify research priorities for livestock in Uganda focussing on Mukono district in the lake crescent area as representative of the differnt production systems exixsting in the country. Data collection methods included analysis of secondary data, reconnaissance surveys, one day "farm immersion" visits of researchers to farms, workshops with farmers, extension agents, researchers, policy makers and a more structured survey to provide quantitative data on a number of key aspects. These data were then analysed through constructing "problem-causa trees" to illustrate key problem areas and linkages. Key recommendations were made for dairy, beef and small stock production systems research and for supporting services. Problems identified and recommendations focussed on breeding stock, feed resources, grazing systems, disease control and marketing channels. In spite of the production problems noted, the team concluded that many opportunities exist for intensive livestock production in Mukono district, due to the overall economic development of Uganda, the proximity and favourable agroclimatic conditions
