The paper deals with the problems of beech stands tending in France and Slovakia. It is focused on main principles of silvicultural treatments and also points to certain differences by their realization in both countries. Attention was especially paid to the criterion for choice of crop trees. By comparison of thinning methods slightly different both site and ecological conditions, in which the beech stands are growing in France and Slovakia, are emphasized.
