Decalogue of some conclusions about the new agriculture in Europe: 1.) Demographic changes in European agriculture will be significant in coming years. Today, about half of farm population is over 55 years old. 2.) Agriculture still plays an important role in some countries, specially in less developed areas with higher unemployment and lower income. 3.) Agroindustry will be a cornerstone in the development of agriculture. Not only as buyer of raw material but as supplier of inputs machinery, agrochemicals. 4.) Biotechnology will show a new horizon in the way to increase productivity in animal and plant production. 5.) Concerns about environmental degradation will increase. The use of agrichemical in intensive agriculture will deteriorate the atmosphere and resources. Special control measures should be developed. 6.) Integration of agriculture with other economic sectors should facilitate a better performance in the overall European economy. 7.) Greater competition among European enterprises may change the traditional behavior in the agrarian sector. Vertical integration and new forms of multinational capital flow will develop a new horizon. 8.) GATT negotiations and other world commitments may incentivate agricultural trade. The EEC would be more dependent in that case on international markets. 9.) Sustainable agriculture and bio-products will be some concepts to be considered important in the coming future. Changing productive structures in that direction should be a priority in the coming C.A.P., with less direct intervention in agricultural markets. 10.) A global view about the solution of problems related with agroindustrial sectors should consider other issues such as tourist, services or other industries.
