Afforestation of former farm land and forest tree breeding

Due to the continuous overproduction in the German agriculture an area of about 600 - 800 thousand ha will be transferred to fallow land during the next years. Afforestation is one possible form of exploitation of this land. To ensure the success of afforestations and their later development the following points are necessary:- the choice of right tree species,- a suitable silviculture regime,- the application of side adapted, appropriate reproductive material with a high performance. For the production and supply of such reproductive material especially forest tree breeding offers a variety of chances.
