The paper introduces a method of analysing the boar-taint 5-alpha-androst-16-en-3-one (androstenone) in adipose tissue of carcasses in slaughter-houses. To ensure an exact timing in the slaughtering process, the method has been highly automated. The automated installation consists of a specific appliance for sample taking of adipose tissue at the slaughtering-line a sample-identification device, a unit for the processing of the samples in preparation for extracting androstenone, an especially developed appliance for the extraction of androstenone on a robotic system, an enzyme-immuno-assay (EIA) to analyse androstenone in a microtitration plate containing 96 wells and peripheral devices for an automated processing and evaluation of the EIA. The whole installation is devised for mobile use and can be installed within one hour by two persons. The time needed for analysing androstenone, from the time of sample-taking of adipose tissue to the moment of correlating the results of the sample to the specific carcass, is determined by the number of samples processed on the microtitration plate, e.g. if 24 samples are taken, the results are available after one hour and 15 minutes.
