The experiment was conducted at Muneng Experimental Station, in the season of 1989. The design was a split-split plot with three replications. The variety Mega was used in the experiment and one plant/hill. The main plot was method of soil tillage : A. without soil tillage, B. once ploughing and once harrowing and C. twice ploughing and twice harrowing. The subplot was mulching application a. without mulching and b. 8 t rice straw/ha as mulch. The sub-sub plot was plant population : 1. 25 cm x 10 cm, 2. 35 cm x 10 cm, and 3. 45 cm x 10 cm. Soil tillage and mulching application did not affect the yield, but 8 t mulch/ha suppressed the growth of weed at 20 days after planting. A higher population i.e. 400.000 plants/ha (25 cm x 10 cm) increased yield significantly compared to the lower population 222,222 plants/ha (45 cm x 10 cm)
