Use of gum arabic and rhizobium inoculant for peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.)

A field experiment to study the effectiveness of gum arabic and rhizobium inoculant on the growth and yield of peanut was conducted on grumusols of Wonosari, Yogyakarta which has low population of Rhizobium. The experiment was conducted in 1987/1988 wet season. A split plot design with three replications was used. The main plot treatments were with and without gum arabic and the subplot treatments were rates of inoculants: 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 g/kg seed. The results of the experiment showed that the use of gum arabic increased the number and weight of root nodules, chlorophyll a+b content in leaves, total N absorbed, number of pods, 100-seed weight and pod dry yield but did not affect plant height, weight of straw, protein content in seed. Compared to control, inoculant rates of 5 to 10 g/kg seed did not significantly affect all parameters observed. Inoculant rates of 15 to 25 g/kg seed however, gave higher yield and yield component and the effect of both rates were not significantly different. The highest yield obtained was 1.88 t/ha of dry pod. The yield was positively correlated with the total N observed and 100-seed weight. Among parameters, positive correlation between root nodule number and root nodule dry weight and between chlorophyll content and the total N absorbed were also observed
