The paper describes a prevalent traditional farming sytem in northern Ghana. The system can be classified into bush and compound farming subsystems. The compound farm is usually cropped every year around the settlements. Farmers might use one or both of these two systems and some congruence exists between the trees found in the cropped fields. Basically two categories of trees can be recognized in the farmers' fields. There are those that are never or seldom planted and found growing wild on fallows and those species that are cultivated in modern agroforestry systems. The uses and application of trees in croplands as well as research activities to improve the traditional system are discussed.
