Growth and muscle fibre traits in cattle
1995
Zgur, S. | Cepon, M. | Osterc, J. (Ljubljana Univ. (Slovenia). Biotechnical Fac., Zootechnical Dept.)
The results of investigations on muscle fibre traits in cattle obtained in Zootechnical department are presented. Muscle fibre traits, muscle fibre diameter, muscle fibre number per mm2, muscle fibre number in muscle cross-section and percentage of different muscle fibre types and their diameter are different in different breeds and crosses. Those breeds and crosses that have higher muscle fibre number in muscle cross-section, have also thinner muscle fibre at the same live weight and grow faster and have higher growth capacity. Higher growth rate in bulls, is in comparison with steers, the result of faster increasing muscle fibre diameter. In comparison with heifers, the bulls have higher number of muscle fibres in muscle cross-section. The estimated heritability for muscle fibre traits were low.
