The tree recently discovered (December 1994) by David Noble in Wollemi National Park, New South Wales (Australia) is described by W.G. Jones, K.D. Hill, J.M. Allen as a new species and genus of the family Araucariaceae. It is named "Wollemia nobilis W.G. Jones, K.D. Hill, J.M. Allen". There are only known 30 adult trees and a similar number of juvenile plants located in two patches within the same rain forest gorge. The species is one of the rarest on the planet. Scientists in Australia and the USA have found in the Wollemie Pine stand quite a lot of plant species unknown up till now and made several important discoveries in regard to the tree's potential medicinal values. Early cultivation successes by using wild seeds and cuttings create international interest.
