Biosims: a method for the estimation of woody biomass for fuel in Sweden

The aims of this thesis are: (1) to define a method for the calculation of woody biomass for fuel at stand level and at regional level in Sweden, (2) to define a method for analysis of consequences for ecological restrictions. The thesis is based on four studies: the main report and three applications of the presented method. The main report is a detailed presentation of the Biosims method as well as a review of current methods and models for calculation of the woody biomass and wood fuel. The method uses stand data or the sample plot data from the National Forest Survey (NFS). A new method for application of ecological restrictions has been presented. These restrictions are based on variables, e.g. soil and vegetation classes, included in the NFS-data. Two methods for woody biomass calculations are used: (1) The biomass functions for the main domestic tree species (Pinus silvestris, Picea abies, Betula pubescens, Betula verrucosa). (2) The ratio method based on forest inventory data and conversion factors or functions between stand variables. This method is under development. The wood biomass is measured as oven dry weight per unit area. The results can be transformed, e.g. into energy equivalents and biomass nitrogen content. In report (I), the quantities and economy when removing woody biomass for fuel and industrial purposes from early thinning are examined. The aims of this study are to test the biomass functions and to test the Biosims method at stand level. In report (II), the Biosims method is used to analyse the consequences of ecological restrictions on harvesting for the protential of wood fuel in the region of Dalarna, Sweden, in 1993. Report (III) is a study of woodfuel potential in Sweden up to about year 2020. The complete version of the Biosims method is used. The study is based on two scenarios relating to the development in the Swedish forest industry.
