[Physical, chemical, mineralogical and micromorphological characterization of argillic horizons in the tableland of Maracaibo]

Jimenez, L. | Noguera, N. | Peters, W. | Larreal, M.
The physical, chemical mineralogical and micromorfological characteristics of fifteen soil profiles of the Maracaibo plain were determined in order to typify the important argillic horizons and to define the differences between them. The results showed that two types of argillic horizons occur with different colors of soil matrix and with or without mottling with chromas of 2 or less that were called red and yellowish argillics. The yellowish contain more fine sand and silt and show higher electro conductivities than the red argillics. The results of clay diffraction showed that in both argillics the predominant clay type is Kaolinite. The micromorphological analysis confirmed the presence of argillians in both and the presence of spherical nodules in the yellowish argillics. The well developed argillians and the predominance of kaolinite indicate that the soil have suffered a very intensive weathering process in the past under more humid climatic conditions.
